All relationships or marriages need work at one time or another, but if you and your partner have been stuck in negative patterns for months or perhaps years, now is the time to seek intervention. Couples therapy is an opportunity to end destructive cycles, rebuild connection, and have healthy and loving experiences again. Sometimes we are so caught up in our problems with one another we forget how to listen, communicate, and be open to each other’s feelings. In couples counseling, you and your partner will learn many important skills that are essential for long lasting relationships. The most successful outcomes are when couples have mutual and realistic goals. Initially, you may not agree on what needs to be different or what has to change, but that is where I come in, to help mediate the conversations and help facilitate productive communication.
Treatment Process
In the first session, you and your partner will meet with me together to discuss the history of your relationship and the issues that are affecting you today. Following the first session, I will meet with each partner in individual sessions to gather more information about your personal histories as a means to understand your experiences more broadly. Then we will rejoin together and continue the couples counseling process on a scheduled basis. Length of treatment depends on the pace of progress you and your partner make. Meeting weekly initially is generally the most beneficial and then as problems resolve or feelings improve we can reduce sessions or end treatment.
