Individual Counseling

When you begin individual counseling, expect it to be a personal journey inward. If you are seeking therapy now, it is probably because you have been searching for important answers in your life. How can I feel more fulfilled? How can I be more connected to my partner? How can I stop feeling so anxious at work? How can I move on from a painful experience? My role is not to provide the answers, but to be a guide. As we work together, you will be the one to discover what gives you worthiness, purpose, belonging, and satisfaction.

Treatment Process

At your intake session, also called an initial evaluation, I will spend time getting to know you. We will spend a good portion of the session discussing your background. This includes collecting demographic information, medical and mental health history, family background and other topic areas that are important for me to have a general understanding of your personal history. Typically, we will also have time to discuss your reasons for pursuing therapy, expectations, and goals.

Length and frequency of treatment can vary from person to person. At least for the first month, I prefer to see clients on a weekly basis as it is important to build rapport and to have a well-rounded sense of what your needs are and means of treatment may be. Following that length of time we can reevaluate together what your necessities are. If you are focusing on a specific issue, therapy may be brief, but broader problems can take more time. If I determine that your needs are beyond the capacities of my scope of practice I will responsibly refer you to a specialist or clinic that can better meet your needs.
